Get Out Of Town

18 November 2016

Breathe fresh air and take in sights of lush greenery with a visit to some of Malaysia’s best nature getaway spots.

Getting caught amidst the hustle and bustle of city life can dampen spirits and take a toll on your wellbeing. The solution? Take a couple days off and reconnect with nature. Malaysia is blessed with green landscapes that offer blissful tranquillity, ranging from one-day visit spots to overnight accommodations.

The Sticks, Selangor
Here's an establishment that gives you a jungle home beautifully nestled amongst cascading vines, bubbling creeks and flowing rivers. The Sticks offers seven accommodation tendoks, each unique and promising fresh air and nature views. Tendoks are simply a cross between a tent and pondok that allow for a true rustic living experience.

A stay at this little haven will leave no time for boredom as outdoor activities are aplenty. The whole family can enjoy jungle trekking, visiting an orang asli village, and a guided botanical walk. For rainy days, classic board games are available. The more adventurous can head out for the thrillers: white water rafting and paragliding.
Getaway type: Overnight
Price: From RM130 per room
Address: Lot 213 Jalan KKB, Fraser's Hill, 44000 Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor

A Little Farm on the Hill, Pahang
Situated some 40 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur, A Little Farm on the Hill is a small organic farm in Janda Baik championing farm-to-table practices. While it doesn’t cater to overnight guests yet, visitors can schedule visits around the Dining Room for meals made with ingredients from the farm, or even host events and parties at the Farmhouse.

Check their website for regular events, talks and more. A Little Farm on the Hill is a beautiful event spot for anyone looking to host a farm-to-table dinner overlooking an organic farming plantation. Take note that advanced booking is required for the lunch service, while weekend bookings need to be done at least 30 days in advance.
Getaway type: Daytrip
Price: Lunch from RM180 per guest with a minimum spend of RM2000 per booking
Address: Lot 161 Tanarimba Janda Baik, Persiaran Enderong, 28750 Bentong, Pahang

The Dusun, Seremban
Described as a nature resort, The Dusun is the brainchild and home to a nature-loving family that started out as a durian orchard before it became a haven for guests in 2009. Today, the resort honours sustainable development in farming and building, creating a healthy environment for a quick getaway from the city. The Dusun has five accommodation homes, ranging from a traditional Malay house on stilts to a modern villa overlooking the Berembun Forest Reserve.

The houses are decked out to offer a rustic vibe with a modern twist: two infinity pools, a private BBQ area, dining patio and spots for lounging around. Guests can also go on guided treks, spot jungle birds, check out the resident deer or get a traditional massage.
Getaway type: Overnight
Price: From RM400 per night
Address:  3437, Kampung Kolam Air, Mukim Pantai, 71770 Seremban, Negeri Sembilan

Sekinchan, Selangor
A spot that’s gained popularity recently, Sekinchan is famed for its Instagram-worthy landscape that boasts coastal roads dotted with oil palm trees and a breathtaking paddy field bordering a little fishing village. The picturesque town is suitable for daytrips and for some, even photoshoots. On your visit, you’ll get to learn more about the paddy plantation process, check out swiftlets by the field, and if you visit in either June or December, you may just get to witness the rice harvesting session.

A trip here should always end with a fresh seafood lunch at the neighboring village and a walk through the fruit plantation nearby.
Getaway type: Daytrip
Price: Free. Nearby accommodation available
Address: Sekinchan, Selangor

Taman Sari, Hulu Langat
Here’s a spot for a quick no-frills getaway that goes back to basics. Situated next to a traditional village, Taman Sari gives you a private residence featuring an open-air concept with only two accommodations available. The open concept allows you to fall asleep under a star-studded sky to the sound of crickets and wake up to the rising sun. One of the two accommodations, the Bothy, offers a more private experience as it’s located away from the main house and has a dining area in the garden.

Taman Sari is surrounded by trees, plants, and promises a traditional village feel (expect to see chickens running about!).
Getaway type: Overnight
Price: From RM350 per night
Address: Batu 18, Jalan Hulu Langat Jaya 2/2, Taman Hulu Langat Jaya, 43200 Cheras, Selangor, Malaysia
