Tiara brings P Ramlee home
KUALA LUMPUR: For thespian and arts enthusiast Puan Sri Tiara Jacquelina, the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee is more than just a legendary actor, singer and director.
“As art practitioners, we have inherited his legacy. We owe everything to him... for this industry that we work in today. “Because of him, there is an entertainment industry to be proud of in Malaysia.
We owe it to him for setting it up for us,” she said at a Press conference of P. Ramlee The Musical 2015 at Panggung Bandaraya here recently. One of Tiara’s major efforts in keeping his memory alive is through the award-winning stage production P. Ramlee The Musical, which had been staged for three seasons so far to critical acclaim. Starting next month, Tiara and her production company Enfiniti Vision Media are bringing the musical to Penang, the birthplace of P. Ramlee.
This is part of the nationwide tour of P. Ramlee The Musical 2015 Dari Penang Ke Singapura which will also include Malacca, since the state’s Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron had requested for it; and Johor Baru, where it is deemed convenient for even Singaporean fans to come over and attend. As show producer, Tiara said, “The musical is our tribute to our grandmaster. P. Ramlee’s story is one of a young man who chased his dreams and became the brightest light in local showbiz. “We hope through this musical, audiences will learn the wonderful yet tragic story of his life, even generations after his passing.”
A production by Enfiniti Vision Media, the musical was previously staged in Kuala Lumpur in 2007, 2008 and last year. It was also brought to Singapore in 2008 and in Kuching in 2013. The musical won eight BOH Cameronian Arts awards including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Script and Best Music. Tiara, who is Enfiniti Vision Media’s group chief executive officer, hopes to spread the love for the musical even further by taking it on tour to other states in Malaysia.
“We need to continue celebrating his extraordinary life and telling his story so that his journey will be known to all. “Everyone who knows who P. Ramlee was, should know why he is called an irreplaceable legend, and what made him a force to be reckoned with,” Tiara said. The P. Ramlee The Musical 2015 Dari Penang Ke Singapura tour begins in Penang (Aug 28-30, Dewan Sri Penang, Georgetown), and it will be part of the Georgetown Festival 2015. It then continues on to Johor Baru (Sept 4-6, Pinewoods Iskandar Malaysia Studio, Nusajaya) and Malacca (Sept 11-13, Panggung Seri Taman Budaya, Ayer Keroh).
The musical’s choreographer Pat Ibrahim said, “We’ve always discussed on bringing it on a tour. After years of daydreaming and planning, it has finally materialised. “We are also excited to meet new audiences who have never watched the musical.” Tiara said that the storyline would remain the same, but there are plans to tweak it a little to make it even more exciting. “We also have to look at making the production compact and efficient for traveling.” Pat added,
“The stages are different at every venue, so there’s going to be a different feel.” The musical will retain most of its cast members from the previous season, including Tony Eusoff as P. Ramlee, Nadia Aqilah Bajuri and Tiara as P. Ramlee’s wives Saloma and Norizan, respectively, and Datuk Aznil Nawawi as Daeng Harris. “Lisa Surihani won’t be able to reprise her role as Junaidah (P. Ramlee’s wife) due to her pregnancy, but we are currently looking for a replacement,” Tiara explained.
Tony added cheekily, “It’s not easy to pick a wife.”
