Eating out for under rm 30: Baba Low's

Peranakan food is not something I would usually go for simply because it isn’t that easy for me to find.

The places I do know that serve the cuisine apparently are “not good”, as judged by friends who are from the Peranakan community and grew up eating dishes like ayam pongteh and kari kapitan.

However, Baba Low’s in Bangsar, KL is one Peranakan restaurant which seems to get the approval of these particular friends. I really wouldn’t know if the dishes they serve there were truly authentic Nyonya or not, though, so this review is simply based on taste alone. And price, of course.

I’ve been to this restaurant a few times and during each visit I would try something different. So far, I’ve had the Nyonya Laksa, Mee Siam, Nasi Lemak with Ayam Goreng Kunyit and Pai Tee (usually spelt as “pie tee”), and have been more or less pleased with everything.

Out of all that, the laksa is probably the best as the gravy is not too spicy for me and there is just the right amount of coconut milk in it. The addition of shredded cucumber and bean sprouts give it a fresh take. I am not a big fan of fish balls though and this dish comes with it, as well as shrimp and cockles. I do wish it was chicken instead.

The Pai Tee is also nice but I suppose there’s nothing much you can do to this snack to really ruin it (except maybe get the shells soggy!). The Mee Siam tastes good, too, but it is served cold – which makes sense since it is described as a “noodle salad” on the menu – and I prefer my noodles to be hot. The sambal that comes with it is a stand out for me so you might want to ask for just that when you’re eating something else!

To be honest, the nasi lemak at Baba Low’s is pretty much like any other nasi lemak … but the Ayam Goreng Kunyit is delicious.

Other interesting items on the menu include Ikan Goreng Cili Garam, Satae-Satae and a chicken soup called Ayam O.

Each dish is priced under RM10 so it is quite affordable and the serving size is decent. I have heard of and read complaints about bad service at the place of late, although whenever we go there things seem to be OK.

The biggest grouse is usually the lack of parking space at the area, but isn’t that pretty much like any other place in the Klang Valley?
