Eating out for under rm30: Fun Kee bamboo noodle restaurant
Weekends are “eat out” days for my family.
Recently, hubby suggested going to a well-established restaurant (set up in 1969) that serves “bamboo” noodles.
What on earth are bamboo noodles, I wondered. Surely not noodles made of bamboo!
The Cantonese Prawn Fried Mee comes with very fresh, succulent prawns.
At Fun Kee, the noodles are handmade the traditional way and not mass-produced. A page on the menu says the dough is kneaded by hand and then pressed using a bamboo pole to achieve a smooth and springy texture.
Since the proof of the pudding is in the eating, what did my hubby and 19-year-old son (we know that teenage boys can really eat, right?) think about their Cantonese Fried Mee (RM8) and Cantonese Prawn Fried Mee (RM10)?
Hubby: The dish is not the usual savoury version but has a sweetish tinge to it, with good ‘wok hei’ (Cantonese for heat from the wok, which enhances the flavour).
Son: The noodles were a tad chewy. It has fresh ingredients, especially the prawns! And flavourful gravy. Overall, delicious and filling.
For someone who usually orders two portions of whatever he has, this time, one serving was enough.
Special Pork Rib Mee with big chunks of tender meat.
When my Special Pork Rib Mee (RM9.50) arrived, I was surprised at the generous portion. It had several chunks of pork ribs in it, and they were oh, so tender!
My daughter was disappointed with her Fried Rice (RM7.50), though, as it was quite plain. The portion was small; the ingredients, paltry.
Mum’s Dumpling Sui Kow Mee (RM7.30) was just so-so, she said. But the Fried Dumplings (RM1.80 apiece) – we ordered six to share – were very tasty.
Other items on the menu include: House Specialty Mee, Char Siu Wantan Mee, Stewed Mushroom and Chicken Feet, Ginger Duck Mee, Beef Tripe Mee, and Cantonese Beef Kuey Teow.
The bill came up to RM63.50, inclusive of GST. Not bad, for five persons.
