5 Underrated Live Music Venues

18 May 2016

Looking for a spot away from the crowds to enjoy live music? Here are 5 venues that have caught our attention.

A fun night of dancing in clubs isn’t the only thing Kuala Lumpur has to offer when it comes to nocturnal entertainment. The city is also home to an abundance of unique outlets that offer a variety of live music performances from jazz to pop, and soul to indie music. Most KL-ites might already be familiar with outlets such as Laundry Bar, The Bee, and No Black Tie. But there is more than meets the eye and we’ve got it listed down for you.

This gem was opened by writer and musician Brian Gomez. Its simplistic nature makes it a great spot for chillout sessions with friends, and you can enjoy a couple of cold ones at the same time. There is no cover charge during shows, but, patrons are encouraged to tip the artists during their performance.  Open mic sessions happen from Tuesday to Friday, and if you’re interested, booking a slot beforehand is advisable. A hub for everything artistic, you will also be able to find independent Malaysian literature and music at this cool spot.

Live House

Live House is one of the many outlets that opened its doors at TREC’s newly launched Electric Boulevard. Despite its casual setting, this new outlet is perfectly designed to give music lovers an amazing experience where they can sit and enjoy energetic live performances from international and local performers. The area can easily fit up to 125 patrons, giving an intimate feel to the shows. One of the plus points here is the collaboration with the popular Killer Gourmet Burgers restaurant, which offers a selection of their gourmet burgers including some uniquely crafted items designed for the venue.

Ril’s Bangsar

Ril’s isn’t just a great venue to get your steak fix fulfilled. Hidden behind a velvet curtain on the first floor is Ril’s Bar, a space that will transport you back to the ‘20s, with its low lights and jazzy ambiance. Customers usually flock over for chats with friends accompanied by classy and creatively created cocktails on the side. While it operates as a typical bar during the week, it is a hot venue on weekends with its live music offerings. You won’t find your typical cover band performing here. The classy setting is a haven for soul, blues, and sometimes cabaret music performances by talented local performers.

Calavera Bar & Grill

One can never miss Calavera that’s situated along Jalan Mesui in the Changkat Bukit Bintang area. It is attached to the chic Mesui Hotel and it screams of Latin-American vibes with its vibrant colours. The food menu here is inspired by Latin American cuisine, with their own unique twists. Dining and drinking is obviously their main attraction but this gem is more than just a regular eatery. Their club nights are on Wednesdays and Saturdays but drop by on Fridays for live music sessions.

Hidden in the urban setting of Damansara Heights, Mezze Lounge has thrived as a favourite spot for mainly contemporary mainstream and jazz live performances every Friday and Saturday nights. Mezze has successfully hosted a wide range of local and international artists since it opened in 2010 and it doesn’t look like they are slowing down any time soon. Under the guidance of musical director

(and one of Malaysia’s renowned jazz pianists) Michael Veerapen, the lounge celebrates all things jazz with surprises included every so often.
