Malays, Indians and tourists join mooncake fest

26 October 2015

GEORGE TOWN: Racial harmony shone bright on a night of mooncakes and lanterns when people of all races converged at Masjid Cina Titi Papan in Burma Road here for the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Some 50 people of various ethnic groups got together for the cultural festival synonymous with togetherness to tuck into dinner and halal mooncakes on Saturday night.

They also walked around the vicinity of the mosque in a mini-lantern parade.

Adults and children alike were seen having a joyful time mingling and sharing cultural delights among each other.

Held for the second year, the event was jointly organised by the Penang Hidayah Centre, Masjid Cina Titi Papan and Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association.

Penang Hidayah Centre secretary Shazwani Amanullah said some of the Chinese Muslim participants baked their own halal mooncakes to share with the crowd.

“We organised the event so everyone could have fun together, and also to help spread the beauty of other cultures among us,” she said.

Although the event was meant for Chinese Muslims, many came with their non-Muslim relatives.

Shazwani said they were also joined by their Malay and Indian friends.

“We were overwhelmed by the turnout,” she said.

“The Mid-Autumn Festival is a cultural activity and Islam does not prohibit Muslims from celebrating it.

“There are many misconceptions about this and we aim to correct them,” she said, adding that several passers-by and tourists also took part in the festivity.

The success of this year’s event, she added, prompted the organising committee to make it an annual affair.

“The next ones will be on a larger scale,” Shazwani said.

Also known as the Mooncake Festival or Lantern Festival, the occasion is traditionally celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar.
