Our Move Towards A Digital Economy
Moving parallel with major economies around the world, Malaysia in 2017 is pushing our digital economy sector forward. In realising our renewed vision as a post-modern nation by the year 2050, we have seen tremendous progress in Malaysia’s digital economic growth in previous years and our initiatives are strategically planned to make it a major financial engine in our country’s further development.
Aware of the potential in our local talents and passion for digital economy, our government has set up the Malaysian Digital Economic Corporation or MDEC to facilitate the growth. MDEC is committed to empower Malaysians by enhancing their digital skills in order to meet industry-demands.
MDEC’s approach the growth of a digital economy in a holistic manner, nurturing and developing the digital workforce of local talents to their fullest ptential. This ensures that the demands of current and future industry-relevant talents are met.
As we head towards a high-income knowledge-based digital economy, the initiatives implemented by MDEC are designed to satiate the talent skills gap that comes with a booming tech ecosystem.
Driving the inclusive adoption of digital solutions, the digital economic support system is to aid a future generation that is equipped with the relevant skills to thrive in a digital economy. On a local outlook, MDEC is spearheading an attitude that makes agents of change out of civil servants, fresh graduates, and young minds. As technology becomes more pervasive in everyday lives, people are able to connect communities globally, improving their employability in a global context.
This results into a digital ecosystem that promotes innovation and creativity. There is a critical need for local tech companies to enter and compete in the global market. Hence, in line with expanding MSC Malaysia’s globalisation footprint, MDEC is committed to identify and accelerate local tech champions into global tech icons.
In lieu with rapid movement of technology and its related areas, Malaysia firmly believes the future lies in innovation, and that being ahead of the technology curve is the way to future-proof businesses. Big Data Analytics (BDA), the Internet of Things (IoT), E-Commerce, and Data Centre & Cloud are key focus areas that have been identified as catalysts that will kickstart and sustain an ecosystem of digital innovation, keeping us at the forefront of technology.
As one of 6 investment promotion agencies (IPAs) under the Malaysian Ministry of International Trade (MITI), attracting foreign direct investments (FDIs) and domestic direct investments (DDIs) is a big part of what MDEC does in maximising the digital economy’s contribution to the country. Today, our Multimedia Super Corridor or MSC Malaysia footprint has expanded to 42 other locations across the country, playing host to more than 3,800 companies from more than 40 countries, employing more than 150,000 high-income knowledge workers, 85% being Malaysians. Malaysia is ranked top 3 in AT Kearney’s Global Services Location Index since 2005, with only China and India ahead of us.
We are humbled to be to have your consideration in sharing and trading knowledge or be it collaborations, with open arms we invite you to invest and kickstart your Digital Business with Malaysia, your gateway to ASEAN.
