Pedal Power: Cycling Establishments Around Klang Valley

18 April 2016

If you’re a cyclist or a bicycle enthusiast, make sure these four establishments are on your must-visit list.

Cafes are on just about every corner in Kuala Lumpur but only in the last few years have we started seeing the rise of cyclist cafes and establishments that support the growing community.  With the introduction of KL's Car-Free Sundays, there has been a steady rise of casual cyclists in addition to the already large numbers of enthusiasts in town. These unique spots have popped up over time and we hope the trend is here to stay! Here are a few of our favourites.

The Grumpy Cyclist
A charming venue and the most well-known, The Grumpy Cyclist rests in the heart of Taman Tun Dr Ismail. Taking inspiration from countries like America and Australia, where cycling culture is rich, this café puts an eatery and love for cycling into one awesome space where enthusiasts can hang out. Besides good food, TGC offers cyclists free showers! Every Thursday night, TGC organises night rides that welcome all kinds of cyclists, a tradition that it has kept since it opened its doors in 2014. Also do look out for their coffee-on-wheels fully-chromed van called the Grumpyvagen that serves their coffee in popular spots around town and during cycling events.

The Basikal
From its humble beginnings in 2013, The Basikal has really come a long way. It has since turned itself into a reputable establishment that’s a cycling guesthouse and café.  Through their establishment and knowledge, they aim to promote cycle culture. The Basikal Tool School allows cyclists to learn about basic maintenance and one can become a certified bike mechanic in just three weeks! The workshop located at this joint makes it easy for cyclists to fix their bicycles too. On top of that, the guesthouse offers 30% discount for cyclists that are passing through. They are one of the only specialists in town when in comes to touring bicycles, so look them up before you finally go on that 1,000 mile cycling trip.

Velocity Café
Well-lit and super spacious, Velocity Café is the brainchild of brothers Wai Hong and Wai Soon. At Velocity, cyclists can benefit from their top-notch bicycle showroom, workshops and if you’re feeling a little peckish after a ride, their café offers a wholesome menu that’s sure to fill up any hungry tummy. Everything about Velocity feels personal and well thought out, so cyclists can truly feel at home when they drop by this cosy yet spacious joint.

Cycle Studios
This establishment is another one that’s located in TTDI, and it is truly a one-of-a-kind store that provides specialised imported items for bicycles. At Cycle Studios, it doesn’t really matter the kind of bike you own – may it be a mountain bike, road bike or even a normal commuting bike – they provide servicing options for all types. You can even get a bike fitting that’s carried by a certified physiologist.

Bring your wheels out to these places.
