The Bread Story

12 July 2016

We check out four old-school bakeries in the Klang Valley.

It’s easy to be overwhelmed and enticed by the rising amount of artisan cafes that offer delicious baked goods. While there’s nothing wrong with that, we can’t help but find ourselves going back to these nostalgic bakeries that’s been serving loyal customers for decades.

Australian Confectionery
The renowned Australian Confectionery opened its doors since 1972 and to this day still offers its customers delicious pastries ranging from blueberry cakes to savoury bites like chicken curry puffs. If you’re feeling a little nostalgic, you can take a trip down memory lane by ordering yourself a slice of Black Forest cake!

Bakery Cake House
Probably one of the oldest bakeries around, the Bakery Cake House is located in Klang and has been opened for almost 39 years. The establishment may be easy to miss with its worn-down sign but loyal customers often find themselves coming back to the shop for the delicious tarts and cream puffs. The owner behind this place was called Mr. Goh and he’s passed the shop down to his son, known only as Goh Jr. Patrons can order to take away or even buy their daily specials, which include traditional cookies, cream puffs and tarts.

Cherry Cake House
Those that live in Petaling Jaya will be very familiar with this pastry spot as it’s been going strong for the last 23 years. A small yet cosy bakery, Cherry Cake House is pretty well known for their durian cream puffs. You can either take your food to go or sit at the long table in the store and watch the kitchen staff at work while sipping on a hot drink. Besides serving delicious baked goods like brownies, Cherry Cake House also offers mouth-watering Malay food.

Meidi-Ya Bakery
If you live around Bangsar, you’ll be pretty familiar with this bakery. Meidi-Ya sits right next to the popular supermarket TMC and has been around for over 30 years. Most of their delicious breads uses long fermentation process to give them that chewy and soft texture we all love in our breads. For those that are health-conscious, Meidi-Ya has plenty of options that suit your dietary needs. If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to not miss out on their pandan gula Melaka bread rolls, which are simply delicious! They’ve also got fresh sandwiches for you to take home.
